WHY DID JESUS HAVE TO DIE AND WHAT DID HE DO ON THE CROSS?

Jesus did not die to rescue us from the wrath of God. Nor did Jesus die to secure for us the forgiveness of sins. God has always freely forgiven people of their sins.

Romans 5:13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

No, the death of Jesus on the cross was to inaugurate the new covenant of God with the entire world, and to indicate to all people that we were no longer slaves to sin.

That second point is critical. Jesus did not die for God because of sin. Jesus died for sin. God’s holiness did not demand that Jesus be put to death. No, it was the devil that demanded death and blood

Hebrews 2:14-15  In as much then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

And in all reality it was us who put him on the cross. Sin was the certificate of ownership which the devil held over the heads of humanity. Although we know now that the devil never had any authority at all, he assumed it.

By dying, Jesus cancelled this debt of sin so that the devil could no longer have any claim upon us.   It is taught that because of Adam and Eve’s sin, all became slaves to death and the devil,. However all died with Him and were raised to new life in Jesus, and so we were liberated and redeemed. Adam did not plunge the entire world into sin.  He gave over to the soulish/sense realm. He now lived in the sensual realm what he saw, thought, heard, felt etc. Sin nature is not imputed.
